Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!

I am excited to begin the new school year teaching Chemistry and a bit nervous, if I am honest. Although this will be my 22nd year teaching, the last two years have definitely thrown some challenges our way.  While there are so many things we can't control, one thing I can do is partner with my students' families to provide a consistent, supportive learning environment, regardless if it is virtual or face to face.

I am passionate about teaching and working with students to develop and strengthen confidence in their critical thinking and problem solving skills.  My classroom focus is hands-on learning using a variety of activities, including cooperative learning, computer simulations, and labs that embody the methodology utilized in the real world scientists.

Cal Poly College of ScienceI am a proud Cal Poly Pomona Bronco as I have earned all of my degrees from Cal Poly.  I have a BS in Biotechnology with a minor in Chemistry, a MA in Educational Leadership as well as teaching credentials in Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, and Introductory Math. This year marks the 20th year of experience in the classroom working primarily with college preparatory students and students who are learning English.

Mrs. V presenting at UCI In addition to my work in the classroom, I also collaborate with colleagues at Whittier College and University of California, Irvine to refine my craft and to ensure that students will have a smooth transition to college work.  As a result of these collaborations, I have presented workshops to other teachers for the California Science Teacher Association as well as collaborate to publish a peer reviewed journal article the National Science Teachers Association journal The Science Teacher. Swanson, Lauren, et al. “Who Tagged the Bench?” The Science Teacher, July 2018, pp. 38–45.

Personally, I am a total geek!  I love Doctor Who, Star Wars, pretty much anything science fiction and I am a LA Kings fan. Some notable memories was when I was able to meet Bill Nye (the Science Guy!) as well as attend a lecture from Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Dr. Lucy Jones.
