SCHOOL WIDE DISCIPLINE PLAN

 

 

In order to guarantee all students in our school the excellent learning climate that each student deserves, we have developed a Schoolwide Discipline Plan.  This plan is a statement of our rules and consequences if a student chooses to break a rule, and positive consequences for those students who choose to improve.  This plan is only a guideline and more or less severe disciplinary steps may be taken if deemed appropriate.  The students of La Serna are expected to demonstrate good citizenship, as well as contribute to a positive school culture.  Students who exhibit acceptable behavior demonstrate our Lancer Learning Results:

POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES

 

  1. Principal’s List – Recognition of selected students exhibiting excellent citizenship/leadership qualities and attendance
  2. Letters of commendation to parents and students
  3. Acknowledgement of students with exceptional positive behavior
  4. Honor Roll Certificates and letters for students who meet requirements

 

 

School Wide Online Learning Expectations:

 

  • Login into Zoom at the beginning of the period and be engaged for the entire period.
  • Use your real name, first and last.
  • Your attire and background should be appropriate for school.
  • Mute your microphone when not speaking.
  • Chat messages should be relevant to the lesson.
  • Required to have video on with live full face on the screen
  • Everything on screen and in the chat room should be school appropriate
  • Students are not allowed to record and take screenshots without teacher permission

 

Examples of Online Misbehavior that can result to a referral to Dean of Students

 

  • Any behavior or language that is seen or heard that is a direct violation of the schoolwide discipline policy.
  • Academic dishonesty (referred to Counselor)
  • Zoom bombing
  • Social media harassment or threats that are brought to the attention of the teacher.

 

 

Misbehavior During Online Learning Will Result In:

  • 1st Offense – Student is removed from online meeting for the day and teacher calls parent.
  • 2nd Offense – Above consequences plus referral to Dean of Students and possible behavioral intervention.
  • 3rd Offense – Above consequences plus parent conference and behavior intervention.

 

 

 

SCHOOL RULES AND CONSEQUENCES

 

  1. RULE: PHYSICAL ALTERCATIONS (FIGHTING) WILL NOT BE PERMITTED ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME.  IT IS A STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO AVOID CONFLICT.  If a student continues to fight after attempts are made by staff to stop the fight or the fight places a staff member and/or student in a potentially harmful situation, causes an injury requiring medical attention or results with others fighting against one person, the student may be transferred to another district school as the first consequence. (ED CODE 48900 A.1)

 

                  1st Offense:                  Suspension and possible citation, program change may be required and possible transfer to a district school and

referral to their counselor. Student may complete restorative justice activity. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

2nd Offense:                 The student shall be suspended and  transferred to another district school. The police may be notified and student cited.  Student may not be able to                              return to La Serna.                        

 

  1. RULE: ASSAULT AND BATTERY WILL NOT BE PERMITTED ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME.                              (ED CODE 48900 A.2)

 

1ST Offense:                 The police may be notified, student arrested, cited and or suspended. Program change may be required  Parent conference required and student will complete restorative justice activity.  Transfer and/or expulsion will be considered. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

 

2nd Offense:                 The police may be notified, student arrested, cited and suspended.  Expulsion will be considered.  Student will be transferred to another district school if not expelled. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

 

  1. RULE: POSSESSION OF ANY TYPE OF WEAPONS, INCLUDING “LOOK-A-LIKES”, BB AND PELLET GUNS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT SCHOOL OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME, ON OR OFF CAMPUS. (ED CODE 48900 B, M)

 

1st Offense:                  Police shall be notified; the student may be arrested and will be suspended and may be recommended for expulsion.  Students will be transferred to another district school if not expelled. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

 

  1. RULE: THE POSSESSION OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, ALCOHOL, MARIJUANA, PARAPHERNALIA**, ANY INTOXICANT AND/OR BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME. First Offense: Possession of a large amount of a controlled substance warrants expulsion consideration. (ED CODE 48900 C, J) 

 

1st Offense:                  Student counseled, suspended and may receive a citation from the police. Parent conference required and student will be transferred to another district school.  (Offense in effect throughout high school years). **Paraphernalia – on first offense, only, will result in an intervention other than suspension or transfer.  2nd offense for Paraphernalia may result in suspension and transfer.

 

2nd Offense:                 The police may be notified; student may be cited and will be suspended.  Parent conference required.  Student shall be placed in the expulsion process.

 

  1. RULE: THE POSSESSION AND SELLING OF ANY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE OR CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE “LOOK-A-LIKE” WILL NOT BE PERMITTED ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME. (ED CODE 48900 D, P)

 

1ST Offense:                 Student will be counseled, will be suspended and may receive a citation.  Parent conference required, behavior intervention put in place and expulsion process initiated.  Student will be transferred to another district school if not expelled.

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DEFACE, DAMAGE, DESTROY, KNOWINGLY RECEIVE STOLEN PERSONAL AND/OR SCHOOL PROPERTY OR STEAL SCHOOL OR PERSONAL PROPERTY.  STUDENTS MAY NOT POSSESS MAKERS, SPRAY PAINT, WINDOW ETCHERS OR ANY APPARATUS INDENTIFIED AS A TAGGING INSTRUMENT.  Gang names and logos are not permitted on school property or on students’ materials used at school.  In EXTREME cases of vandalism or stealing, the student will be transferred to another district school. (ED CODE 48900 F)

 

1st Offense:                  The parents are notified, school intervention put in place and student may be suspended and may receive a citation. The student may be required to replace or repair and/or have his program altered. Parent conference may be required.

 

                  2nd Offense:                 The student may be transferred to another district school. Police may be notified and student possibly cited.

 

 

  1. RULE: DISRESPECT, INTIMIDATION, BULLYING (to include CYBER BULLYING via Social Media/Text Messaging), OBSCENE ACTS, SEXUAL HARRASSMENT OR THREATS (DIRECT OR VEILED) WILL NOT BE TOLERATED ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION AT ANY TIME.  In EXTREME cases, the student will have his/her program altered, be transferred to another district school and/or recommended for expulsion on the first offense.  Students involved in repeated verbal confrontations will be placed on contract and/or transferred. (ED CODE 48900 G, L, O, .4, .7).

 

                  1ST Offense:                 The student shall participate in restorative justice activity and/or suspension may occur; parent notified. Student may not be able to return to La

Serna.

 

                  2nd Offense:                 The student may be suspended/transferred, may receive a citation and possible recommendation for expulsion.

 

                  3rd Offense:                 The student shall be transferred to another district school and/or recommended for expulsion.

 

                      

  1. RULE: STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ENGAGE IN THE ACT OF BULLYING.

 

“Bullying” means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or by means of an electronic act, and including one or more acts committed by a pupil or group of pupils as defined in Section 48900.2, 48900.3, or 48900.4, directed toward one or more pupils that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:

 

  1. Placing a reasonable pupil or pupils in fear of harm to that pupil’s or those pupils’ person or property.
  2. Causing a reasonable pupil to experience a substantially detrimental effect on the pupil’s physical or mental health.
  3. Causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with the pupil’s academic performance.
  4. Causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with the pupil’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.

 

 

“Electronic act” means the creation or transmission originated on or off the school site, by means of an electronic device, including, but not limited to, a telephone, wireless telephone, or other wireless communication device, computer, or pager, of a communication, including, but not limited to, any of the following:

 

  • A message, text, sound, video, or image.
  • A post on a social network internet website, application or any other online platform.
  • Posting to or creating a burn page. “Burn page” means an internet website created for the purpose of impersonating another pupil without consent for the purpose of bullying.

 

1st Offense:      The student shall be counseled and a school intervention and/or suspension may occur; parent notified. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

 

2nd Offense:      The student shall participate in a restorative justice activity, and possible suspension/transfer.

 

3rd Offense:      The student shall be transferred to another district school and/or recommended for expulsion.

 

 

CYBER SEXUAL BULLYING is defined as:

The dissemination of, or the solicitation or incitement to disseminate, a photograph or other visual recording by a pupil to another pupil or to school personnel by means of an electronic act that has or can be reasonably predicted to have one or more of the effects described in (A) to (D), above.

 

1st Offense:      The student shall be counseled and a school intervention and/or suspension may occur; parent notified. Student may not be able to return to La Serna.

 

2nd Offense:      The student shall participate in a restorative justice activity, and possible suspension/transfer.

 

3rd Offense:      The student shall be transferred to another district school and/or recommended for expulsion.

 

 

 

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO POSSESS TOBACCO PRODUCTS AT SCHOOL OR AT SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES. (ED CODE 48900 H 48901)

 

                                1ST Offense:                 The student shall be counseled and a behavior intervention is to be put in place.. Students who are caught smoking are subject to a search for tobacco products.  Tobacco products shall be confiscated.

 

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO HAVE IN THEIR POSSESSION AND/OR IGNITE FIRECRACKERS, M-80’S, STINK BOMBS OR OTHER RELATED EXPLOSIVES ON CAMPUS OR AT ANY SCHOOL FUNCTION. (ED CODE 48900 K)

 

1st Offense:                  The student shall be suspended and a parent conference required.  Student’s program may be altered. Police and the Fire Department may be notified and student cited.

 

                  2nd Offense:                 The student shall be transferred to another district school. Police and the Fire Department may be notified and student cited. Student may not be                                 able to return to La Serna.

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DEFACE, ALTER, DAMAGE AND/OR DESTROY TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES OR SCHOOL DOCUMENTS.  USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WUHSD’S “ELECTRONIC INFORMATIN RESOURCES USER AGREEMENT” WHICH ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE EXPECTED TO SIGN. (ED CODE 48900 K)

 

1st Offense:                  The student will be counseled and a school intervention and/or suspension may occur.  The student may be dropped from the specific class and be expected to compensate for damages.

 

2nd Offense:                 The student will be suspended, counseled and assigned to in-house retention and a parent conference required.

 

3rd Offense:                 The student will be suspended and transferred to another district school, or recommended for expulsion.

 

  1. RULE: CHEATING SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED.  CHEATING INCLUDES GIVING OR RECEIVING ANSWERS ON CLASS ASSIGNMENTS OR TESTS THAT WILL BE TURNED IN FOR CLASS CREDIT OR USING UNAUTHORIZED SOURCES OF DATA (i.e. TEXT MESSAGES, PHOTOS).  IN PAPER WRITING, PLAGIARISM IS NOT PERMITTED; THIS INCLUDES THE COPYING OF ANOTHER STUDENT’S PAPER. (ED CODE 48900 K)

 

                  1st Offense:                  The student shall receive a zero on the test and/or class assignment, referred to a counselor and parent notified.

 

                  2nd Offense:                 The student shall receive a zero on the test and/or class assignment, referred to a counselor, may be dropped from the class and transferred to Viewpoint for the duration of the semester.

 

  1. RULE: TARDINESS SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED. (ED CODE 48900 K)

 

                  Each Offense:             Teachers will establish classroom policies governing tardiness. Detention may be assigned. If student continues to be tardy despite teacher intervention, student may receive a referral to the Dean of Students and shall participate in a school intervention.

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE CAMPUS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY WITHOUT AN OFF CAMPUS PERMIT. (ED CODE 48260, 48264.5A, 48900 K). Dean of Students will address Online Truancies on a case by case basis.

 

                  1st Offense:                  Truancies will be issued.  (See rule 16) Viewpoint will be assigned to students leaving fenced area at nutrition or lunch.

                  2nd Offense:                 Same consequences as 1st Offense and student may be cited.

 

  1. RULE: BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS, MOTORCYCLES AND MOPEDS MAY NOT BE RIDDEN ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS AT ANY TIME.  STUDENTS MAY NOT BE IN POSSESSION OF SKATEBOARDS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8AM AND 3PM. (ED CODE).  SKATEBOARDS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL MAY NOT BE CARRIED FROM CLASS-TO-CLASS.

 

                  1st Offense:                  The above items may be confiscated and only released to parent.

                  2nd Offense:                 The student may lose the privilege of bringing the above item to school and on campus.

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND SCHOOL DAILY

 

                  Excessive absences: Students who have excessive absences (11 + days absent per year) may be required to obtain doctor notes to excuse absences.

 

                  Non-medical:            Please be advised that teachers are not required to give make-up work for non-medical absences.

 

 

  1. RULE: STUDENTS SHALL NOT BE TRUANT. (ED CODE 48264.5A)

 

                                    Each Offense:             Saturday school may be assigned on the basis of 1 hour for every period cut and 4 hours for every all-day truancy.  Excuses to miss Saturday School are not accepted. Failure to attend Saturday School: The student shall be reassigned ONCE.  If a second miss occurs, the student may be placed on an Attendance Contract. Truant students may be cited by law enforcement.  Fines may be imposed.

 

 

 

  1. RULE: CELL PHONES AND EARBUDS ARE NOT TO BE VISIBLE, HEARD OR USED IN THE CLASSROOM WITHOUT THE

                                        APPROVAL OF AN INSTRUCTOR OR SCHOOL PERSONNEL. (ED CODE 48900 K).  EARBUDS AND SPEAKERS CANNOT BE VISIBLE OR HEARD OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.

 

                  1st Offense:                  Student will be warned and item may be confiscated and returned to parent or guardian by the Dean of Students.

                                    La Serna High/Whittier Union High School District assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any equipment/property brought by a student to school that   may be damaged or lost, or confiscated for non-compliance with the official school policy.

 

1                18.              RULE:     STUDENTS SHALL COMPLY WITH STAFF DIRECTIVES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY, AS POLICIES ARE A REFLECTION OF

         SCHOOL WIDE LEARNING RESULTS. STUDENT SHALL NOT DISRUPT SCHOOL ACTIVITIES OR OTHERWISE ENGAGE IN WILLFUL                          DEFIANCE OF THE VALID AUTHORITY OF SUPERVISORS, TEACHERS ADMINISTRATORS, SCHOOL OFFICIALS, OR OTHER SCHOOL         PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES.

 

1st Offense:                  Staff member contacts parent, removal from class during period, and an intervention activity is to be completed.

                  2nd Offense:                 Above consequences, parent contact by Dean of Students and possible parent-conference.

                  3rd Offense:                Above consequences, in-house retention, possible program change and conference.

                                                     

 

 

Because we cannot predict every possible situation that could occur on campus, the Principal may take whatever steps are deemed necessary to keep students and staff safe.

 

 

  • All lockers are property of Whittier Union High School District and are subject to being opened by school personnel.
  • School rules remain in effect on your way to school, on your way home, at any point during the school day (on or off campus), and at any school activity, including online classroom time.
  • When a student is sent to Viewpoint or the Guidance Office for disciplinary reasons, his or her phone is taken and returned at the end of the school day
  • Students and/or their property may be searched by school personnel if there is reasonable suspicion of a school rule being violated, in an effort to maintain a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Safety searches are conducted by a trained canine and handler. The searches are periodically and randomly used to search for dangerous or illicit contraband.
  • Teachers have the right to have their own tardy and electronic device policies
